Scilly Pelagic no 6 - evening Shearwaters galore

Another evening session with a shark fishing trip, outnumbered by fishermen once more but this was an exceptional evening nevertheless!

We headed south with the wind still 15mph westerly and whilst we only saw 3 Cory's Shearwater, the first was an obliging bird on the water!

With flight being a safe bet as we neared it!

There were 15 Great Shearwaters seen both in flight and on the water...

And then 2 Wilson's Petrel maintained the BIG 3 run, the first a really neat individual.

Support came from 20 Sooty Shearwaters...

c500 Manx Shearwaters...

And a single Arctic Skua (dark morph)!

Amazing just how good the birding can be despite the fact it wasn't a full on birders pelagic!

Scilly Pelagic no 5 - Yet another BIG 3

The wind had picked up slightly to a 15mph westerly as we gathered together at the quay. Evening pelagics are shorter and have a more limited chance of attacting Wilson's Petrel so it was with quite a relief that two were attracted to the oily slick this evening...

Here's the distant second bird.

It was also hard work on the Cory's Shearwater front with just 3 seen

12 Great Shearwater came by however including this group of four giving a close pass

On quiet evenings, time to pay attention to one of the ever present birds - Fulmar pics for a change!

Oh and Bella was happy, it was Common Dolphin time!!

And courtesy of Richard Stonier, the track taken this evening!

Scilly Pelagic no 4 - Balearic Shearwater

The wind had eased overnight to a 12mph westerly and it was another mission due south looking for feeding Gannets etc and we hit the first just 2 miles from St Mary's...

Here's the crew for the day, somewhat dazed by the 8.00am start!!

We only saw one Balearic Shearwater but it stayted with us for a while and put on quite a show!

A nice burst of flight...

And it circled around for more of the same...

Probably the best display I've seen to date?

Scilly Pelagic no 3 - Shearwaters and Petrels

A brisk southerly 20-25mph breeze greeted Sapphire as we steamed south from St Mary's in search of feeding frenzies. Here's a taste of some gentle rock and roll as Sapphire heads out...

The sea was beginning to become more menacing as got 8 miles offshore and opted to drift eastwards before using the lee of the islands to dampen down the swell. It was a Great Shearwater spectacular with an estimated 200 seen...

Most beyond the range for photography but that didn't stop me trying to get some lined up with the passing Scillonian! They were probably getting a closer view at times?

Just a single Cory's Shearwater seen but at least that was a close pass!

As we eventually cut the engines and drifted, the chum worked it's magic and drew in the local Storm Petrels, at least 50 working their way up the oily slick and passing by the boat.

They have to be one of the trickiest subjects, constantly changing direction as they passed by.

It was looking like a no show for Wilson's Petrel but patience and the waiting game will eventually pay dividends and we had excellent views of this single bird...

The classic flight pose!

A brief dance on the water before ending up in the glare upwind and into the light!

And we all got wet, but smiling all the way in...

With 200+ Manx Shearwater, a single Balearic and 35 stand offish Sooties, we cleaned up on all the expected Shearwaters and Petrels. 2 Bonxies finally put in an appearance too!
