On this day (May 10th) 2016 - Perfect passage

A big post from VP Memory Lane - the weather appalling, the birds superb!!

The light was dire, the weather apalling but amongst other good birds, the drake Garganey was astill present - went almost unnoticed today!

The resident male Shelduck has serious 'anger management' issues and whilst it spends most hours of the day chasing almost everything, the Garganey seems to be the 'little guy' he picks on!

A moment for a breather in front of me!

 Whoops here he comes again!!

Shutter speed in short supply but hey that wind blur looks dynamic - this is ART!

Back to the waders next.....

Easterly winds, low cloud and drizzle - the omens which looked good at least produced some excitement! Firstly in the form of a Sanderling :-)

Settled at first and busily feeding up as they do.....

Another dash across the mud....

Constantly being moved about by the territorial Little Ringed Plovers!

Will I be safe on the nearest island?

For a moment anyway!

This was the pick of the waders but there's more to come.....

Redshank had been downed by the rain and present all morning. With so many other things (birds) going on, I eventually caught up with it from the North hide.....

It wasn't doing much!

But eventually ventured into deeper water.....

Striding around the margins....

Eventually giving a nice show of those smart legs!

Caught in mid stride....

What else is showing well today?

It was all happening today, it was almost as if the Sanderling got kicked into touch as my attention turned to the single Common Tern which had been present since arrival!

You can't have it all and good Tern days are invariably dank and drizzly....

But watching Terns jink and jive as they catch insects in flight is magic (especially when you never quite know if you'll see them here from one year to the next!)

And before long, I realised there was company arriving!

Three more Common Terns......

Imagine my excitement when after another 30 minutes, it literally rained a new flock of newcomers!

I couldn't get them all in the frame but repeated counts revealed the new (much larger) group numbered 22 more Common Terns

Not enough room on this bit of prime Tern real estate!

And occasionally they would land and spread out on the main island.....

Occasionally flying in and out....

One Tern (probably the original one for the day) kept flying but we were now witnessing the amazing sight of 25 Terns on the deck.

All good things have to come to an end of course and something triggered (I don't think it was the Coots) their eventual departure after 90 minutes or so?

There they were (well, most of them) gone but not forgotten!!

A record count for the reserve - by a mile!!

On this day (May 9th) - Whimbrel

A logjam of riches from the previous day, mean this Whimbrel is 'carried over' from the previous day. Getting back to the wader theme!

I decided to nip back to Venus Pool and pretty glad I did! As I walked through the hide door, Geoff Holmes remarked - "here's Lucky Jim"! A Whimbrel had just dropped in - not far out in front of the hide.....

Looking a bit nervous and flighty too!

But going to great lengths to show us his salient features!

And then not just a wingflap.....

A lapwing finally got a taste of his own medicine!!

Two minutes later - looking settled and then.......

Gone! And I missed the take off :-(

On this day (May 8th)... Temmincks Stint in 2008

One of the best and rarest waders to drop into VP in recent years was this Temmincks Stint #OnThisDay in 2008. Here's the original blog...

What a fantastic few 'Shropshire' days recently with good birds turning up almost everywhere! Having got the Whixall Marsh Harrier and a couple of Black Terns (neither of which will feature here) it was a question of drop what you're doing and get down to VP this evening where a Temmincks Stint had dropped in. (Thanks once again Geoff and Graham!!)

There are plenty of inland Temmincks about at present but this was special - on the old patch! It got even better - what better place to spend time on the island, in front of the memorial hide. Now, for such a small bird that is a big big bonus!!

Tell you what, considering the size of Stints (think Sparrow size!) - I'm well pleased with this one!!

And if you don't believe me, here's a Lapwing for comparison!

A big break from Shropshire again over the next week - I'm in the North East, working sadly but I have the chance of a day or two at 'play'. The Farnes are not far away - just hope the weather holds?

On this day (May 7th)... Garganey in 2014

Early May is prime time for Garganey and in 2014 a female Garganey at Wall Farm would have loved the opportunity to meet up with this showy male at VP the following day!

A late start today but all was not lost - Rob Stokes had found a male Garganey first thing and whilst very mobile, feeding up like crazy, it was clearly going nowhere in a hurry. The light was better too!

I'll spare you the many distant images - here's the closer action.....

Never far from the weed, clearly full of dabbling goodies!

Time to move on to the next patch.......

Occasionally and very briefly in open water!

A quick wingflap.....

Followed by a rest on terra firma!

And a preen.....

Pick of the bunch threesome?

Maybe he's longing for a female? A quick fly over to Wall Farm would put that to rights!

The long staying female Garganey at Wall Farm....

On this Day (May 6th)... Avocet!

Another Shropshire Avocet and there have been precious few! On May 6th 2017

It's entirely possible, non-locals might be wondering what the fuss is all about? Avocets are tricky Shropshire birds, annual at best, every other year more likely! And Wood Lane is surely the most likely space for them to settle in one day??

A not entirely inspiring start, fast asleep on the far side of the scrape!

Eventually waking up...

And walking my way :-)

I'll spare you the bits in between! Closer all the time and feeding like crazy, this bird wont be here much longer?

Showing off those stunning legs!

Job done I think, couldn't be any closer...

Quite a day! Shame about the bird race although 68 species in a morning is pretty good going, thanks to everyone concerned for helping out!

The Moon!

The moon was shining bright tonight so to keep my shutter from seizing up, I took a few pics. And yes they all look the same so here's a representative image...

On this day (May 5th)... 2013 Gulls

A couple of unexpected Gulls at Wood Lane on 5th May 2013...

News from the North of the County was soon to follow though (thanks Damo and co!) Kittiwake at Wood Lane!!

It had flown off too setting the scene for a disappointing day but I decided to stick it out.....

My luck was in as it flew back in briefly, had a wash... an altercation with the local Gulls and then off yet again!

Standing (or should I say sitting) out nicely....

Quick wash and wingflap.......

Such an angelic bird!

An ominous manoeuvre!

Before disappearing aqnd not seen again.......

One of the Mediterranean Gulls was also captured in flight - it stayed though!
