Venus Pool - Channel crossing

A pretty uninspiring day was rescued with Andy finding a cracking Channel Wagtail at VP this evening. I was there like a shot but it always stayed distant. I managed to grab one or two 'record shots'.......

The British Tellow Wagtail (Motacilla flava flavissima) crosses with the Continental species Blue-headed Wagtail (Motacilla flava flava) to give this hybrid now referred to as Channel Wagtail. The appearance is pretty consistent too. The pale (powder blue) head and very prominent white supercilium with much more white in the throat, are classic features. I'll end this post with a couple of images of the North Shropshire male from 2010. (Which reminds me, I need to get these finally sorted and written up for the rarity file (sorry Geoff!!)

Despite the diastance, one smart bird!

There were at least 12 other 'flavissima' Yellow Wagtails....

And one good job the Hebridean Sheep do is keep them there!

Here's a couple of images featuring the male Blue-headed Wagtail from 2010......

That's all for now but more to come on this thread.....

Venus Pool - Another Brent!!

The morning started at Venus Pool and sat with Rob Stokes and Paul Burgess in the Memorial hide, I couldn't quite believe my eyes as I picked up.... a Dark bellied Brent Goose out on the mud in the middle of the pool!

I've waited years to get a Shropshire Brent and Venus Pool turns up yet another one for the year!! It eventually moved into the water and had a good wash.......

Before eventually swimming over for a closer look!

Landfall....

Always seeming to include vegetation in the way but occasionally finding the gaps!

I could see it was working it's way towards the main hide so nipped over there, just at the moment it flew onto the mud in front of the hide.....

The last pose before disappearing around the corner out of view....

A final fly around.....

And that's your lot!

Earls Hill - Snow on the summit!

It was 6.3ish in the evening and apart from a distant Tree Pipit on nBlack Hill, I'd had nothing worthwhile to show for the day. All that was about to change as I munched on a burger and got a missed call! After a redial, it was news from Mike S who had picked up an intriguing post on Birdguides - 'Snow Bunting near the summit of Earls Hill'....

Intriguing or what, it had to be worth checking out. I sped off with Andy / Jack picking up Mike from the pub en-route....

I know Earl's Hill well, I know just how tough the walk through the pines is - relentless and near vertical. I wasn't looking forward to it unloaded but with camera gear on my back and the burger rolling around in my stomach, would I make it?

I sure did, head down, a veerrrrry slow pace but made it without a stop and eventually breathed (heavily) a sigh of relief as I emerged onto the hillside and final push.....

Andy and Jack soon joined me, a 'runner' (mad or what) when asked, said he'd seen a small 'grey' bird just down from the trig point! We accidently flushed it but this bird was going nowhere in a hurry....

The Snow Bunting settled down in some rocks, playing peekaboo..... we waited for Mike who was still ascending but having to offload a few pints of liquid ballast - eventually we had all scored!

The light was fading fast and Snow Bunt was feeding up furiously. Pretty confiding too as we watched it perform.....

Closer and closer it came.....

These two will do nicely....

Thumbs up from the lads, County ticks for three of us - (Andy's fourth or fifth!!) Mike really, no really.... has given up alcohol from this pont in time (honest!)

On a Sunday afternoon anyway.! Hmm.... looking a bit unsure about that?

Titterstone Clee - Battle of the screes

I wasn't going to give up on a Ring Ouzel, yet..... Another morning session, another blank but at least there were plenty of Wheatears to keep me company.

Setting the scene....

Possession of a stretch of rocky slope + possession of one of these.....

= TROUBLE! And there was plenty in store!

Plenty of posturing.....

Before letting fly.....

A few close quarters tussles....

A close call........

The weather dictated an early finish after I took a look to the West and this fast approaching storm (and it did get very very wet!)

Titterstone Clee - Wheatears

Ring Ouzels are in the Country but there were none about on Titterstone Clee this morning! I don't know when Wheatears have been mnore obliging though: at least 6 in the Quarry and c15 on the screes near the car park. Males were putting on a formidable display to 'would be' competitors for territory or females.....

Feeding up....

Surveying their little Empire!

Then of course - trying to win over this little lady?

Males posing.......

Then catching a creepy crawlie or two.....

Some serious defence manouevres!

Tail fanning is one way of expressing agression and where territory is concerned - having got it, it will take quite a fight to give it up.....
