Venus Pool - Goosanders

The river Severn in flood often encourages some local birds not always seen at VP to drop in and five Goosanders were enjoying the calm conditions today! They were wandering all over the pool, occasionally coming close...

Females first...







 Males are always tricky in 'white sky' conditions but I had a go...







Back to welcoming waders / terns in due course hopefully...

Venus Pool -- Dunlin & Goosander

The highlight of a couple of hours spent out of the house! A lone winter plumage Dunlin  lifted the spirits but it never came close...


Better luck with this female Goosander...

Ellesmere - Goldeneye and Goosander

Whilst waiting for the Scaup to (hopefully) come a little closer, the warm up acts were firstly a male Goldeneye...




Followed by a pair of Goosander...


Things got more interesting after a bit of a wash...


And as for the effects of preening!




Crikey, you never quite know what you are going to get...

Shropshire - Pink-footed Goose etc

Another 12 species added today from a tour of Telford pools, Whixall Floods then finishing up at The Mere roost. The only half decent images came from Middle Pool, Telford where a Pink-foot was tagging along with the Greylags...






Plus three Goosander including this male...



The floods at Whixall produced: Little Egret, Pintail and Shelduck.  The Great Whites had deserted Crosemere and it was a poor roost at the Mere. Never mind, Goldeneye, Mandarin and Common Gull kept things ticking over and the list grows to 72...
