On this day (April 26th) ... 2008 Hoopoe and Avocet!

It's April 26th 2008 and after a fruitless search for Dotterel, it turned out to be one of my most memorable days in the county!

I headed South with the Long Mynd first point of call - Dotterel eluded me last year so hoping for better luck this year? Not today though; after a scour of the Sheep fields and glider station. I did pick up a couple of Red Grouse however, a Swift overhead was the first of the year for me and of course there were Meadow Pipit, Skylark, Stonechat and Wheatear!

Then, off to the tiny settlement of Pentre Hodre near Bucknell in South Shropshire where a Hoopoe had been seen the previous couple of days. I bumped into Kev Joynes who had photographed it the previous day - we worked together, soon realising this was going to develop into a search! After about 45 mins of working the lanes, we unexpectedly found the bird in the roadside verge. It promptly flew up and hopped over the hedge into the neighbouring field. It then became a stalking challenge - trying to get a decent view through every opportunistic gap in the hedge. As you can see, we did get some excellent views, all too brief sadly but some decent images were recorded. Eventually a passing birder decided to park his car right by where the bird was feeding and flushed it (sadly, not to be seen again that day!!)

At about midday, I decided to have a break from Hoopoe hunting and with Black Hill looming to the North, drove up there for a quick look around. There were plenty of birds singing - mostly Willow Warblers.....

.... a few Chiffs and then the unmistakable sight and sound of Tree Pipits! I saw at least four, fresh in and giving it their all with fantastic display flights with superb views on top of the conifers. The backdrop was pretty critical and some really atmospheric shots were captured from the darker surroundings.

A return to Pentre Hodre and the Hoopoe hunt proved uneventful. At about 3.45, I decided to move on to Bridges.

I never got there! Once the mobile signal was activated, a backlog of missed calls and texts came in - AVOCET at Venus Pool!!

I had been lucky enough to see the Wood Lane Avocets in 2006 but this was just as exciting an event - second County record and a first for Venus Pool!!

All the speed limits were dutifully observed and I got there at 4.30 with the Avocet still showing really well. Best views were from the Memorial hide - this is a bird you take for granted in Norfolk but in Shropshire, a fantastic sight!

Here's just a taste of the action.....

Oh, I nearly forgot - there was a Whimbrel there too, would normally have been the star turn of the evening. Distant record shots only!

Blimey, what a day!!

On this day (April 25th) ... 2019 - Channel Wagtail

This little beauty featured in the April Birdwatch 'Guide to Yellow Wagtails' - here's the full sequence of events on April 25th 2019...

Is there a more beautiful bird? This was the highlight of a North Shropshire tour of the Meres and North Shropshire. The answer is probably 'yes' but I fell in love with Channel Wagtail after my first encounter at at Venus Pool in 2011 and despite the fact it's an untickable (hybrid) bird, worth every effort to enjoy... Having seen several now, they are consistently uniform in appearance but the light can play a huge part in the colours we see. A hybrid between the European Blue-headed Wagtail (Motacilla flava) and our resident 'Yellow wagtail' (M. flavissima) it combines the head of the former (in a paler grey blue tone) plus bright yellow underparts. Simply drop dead gorgeous...

It was looking good even 60m away...

So, I picked spot to stand and wait... patience is a virtue of course!

Just a turn of the head and movement of the grass...

The pristine white throat and sharp demarcation with the yellow add to the charm. The dark patch is the wind ruffling the feathers!

With two successive thunderstorms, the background (distant trees) colours were constantly changing. The darker tones set it off quite nicely?

How about a lucky moment calling!

'Showing well' would be a safe description...

On this day (April 24th)... - in 2011 - Grasshopper Warbler

One our most enigmatic birds,  a look back to April 24th 2011 and a Grasshopper Warbler not just reeling but showing as well!

The highlight of a trek around the Longmynd this morning was undoubtedly this individual (one of three Grasshopper warblers reeling) Having located him, just a matter of waiting for him to pop up and 'reel away'.

He did pop up quite close.....

The closest....

And then proceeded to reel it's heart out!

Often hidden from view but in this particular instance, perched on top of the heather!

It doesn't get much better than this!

On this day (April 23rd)... 2017 Dingle Night Heron

The Shrewsbury Dingle Night Heron - early days!! You can sense the excitement?!!

Setting the scene, this is the only Heron normally seen in this idyllic Shrewsbury garden known as The Dingle!

No superlatives in part one? Bloody hell, absolutely amazing, the Night Heron has not only flown towards us... but landed in a bank side bush in full view! It doesn't look close, does it but it's less than 10m from the bank!

The only questions being asked were, how quickly can I get the converter off and why hadn't I got a shorter focal length lens with me (again)

OK, Converter is now removed but it's still frame filling!!

And walking closer... OMG!

Now there's no alternative, a close up fest beckons...

I'm staying calm!

I was almost relieved when it flew back over to the other side of the pool? Noooo, it''s still too close! (Only kidding) :-)

And if you've never seen a Night Heron's tongue?

I walked around to the far bank - the shot I'd been hankering for - Shrewsbury Night Heron - in habitat!!

Just another ordinary day turned rather extraordinary!!! You couldn't have scripted this?
